Mental health matters: École J.B. Mitchell School empowers young learners
February 10, 2025
Students at École J.B. Mitchell School are exploring mental health through a unique artistic journey. A recent collaborative project between Grade 3 and 4 teachers and KidThink clinicians is helping students discover their inner strengths and emotional well-being.
"Working with KidThink has allowed us to take a proactive, strength-based approach to mental health. We're helping build resilience and reduce mental health stigma," said Kevin Roberts, a Grade 3/4 teacher.
"The opportunity to partner with the clinicians from KidThink has been incredibly beneficial for our learners. It helped us, as teachers, to continue to create environments where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. This approach has made a real difference in how students engage with their mental well-being."
One example of a KidThink art exercise is getting students to create deeply personal art projects, using trees as metaphors for their inner selves. Each artwork tells a unique story of personal growth and self-discovery.
"The roots show my culture, background, and heritage. The trunk keeps me strong," explains Erik L., a Grade 4 student. "My branches reach out for my goals. When I grow up, I want to be a baseball player and a good community helper."
Students gain unexpected personal insights through the project. "I thought it was interesting to read about trees having personalities like ours," said Oscar, a Grade 3 student.
“I connected most with a large ancient redwood, which is also my mom's favourite tree. It was difficult to discover all of my strengths, but after exploring them, I was surprised and felt proud."
For many students, the art experience is transformative. "This art experience made me think about who I am and what my strengths are," mentioned Ellie, a Grade 4 student.
"It made me feel happy and proud to be who I am."
Principal Matt Couture emphasizes the school's holistic approach. "We're focused on interoception and wellness, helping students understand how body sensations impact their emotional regulation," he says.
"Our Grades 3 and 4 team of teachers, in partnership with clinicians from KidThink, advanced the well-being of our students by encouraging further discussions about mental health wellness and integrating writing and visual arts as part of this exploration."
By helping young learners recognize their strengths and understand their emotions, École J.B. Mitchell School is nurturing resilient, self-aware students.
The program highlights Winnipeg School Division's commitment to supporting students' mental health and emotional growth.
