Winnipeg School Division is breaking new ground with its esthetics program at Tec-Voc High School. What started as a nail technology program in September 2023 is now expanding into a comprehensive beauty and wellness career pathway for students.

The program launched with four Grade 10 and four Grade 9 classes. Students dive deep into the art and science of nail care. They learn techniques for manicures, pedicures, and artificial nails, including acrylic, gel, and Gel-X methods.

To graduate, students must meet strict standards. They need to maintain a 70% average in esthetics courses and complete 400 hours of technical training. The program’s first group of graduates is now ready to enter the industry and begin apprenticeships.

Starting next school year, Tec-Voc's program will offer a full esthetics curriculum with students learning a broader range of skincare and beauty techniques including specialized facials, microdermabrasion and micro-needling, dermaplaning, body treatments and massage, and brow and lash services. Graduates earn a full esthetician certificate before they enter the workforce and continue their apprenticeship journey.

The esthetics program offers more than just technical skills. Winnipeg and Manitoba have a thriving network of salons and spas, where these apprentices can secure guaranteed wages at least 15% above minimum wage.

Career paths are diverse for students with this training. They can become a spa esthetician or owner, a medical esthetician, a cruise ship esthetician, or even a product sales rep.

Students praise the program's hands-on approach. They work on each other throughout their studies and serve real clients in their final year.
Ella N., a nail technology graduate, shared her experience. "Mrs. Jefferson is one of the most passionate teachers I've ever met. Her love for what she teaches is so inspiring,” she said. “The program is super informative and hands-on. I left feeling fully prepared to step into the industry with confidence."

Lilianna P. agreed: "It is an amazing program. I learned so much and gained so much confidence. Mrs. Jefferson takes the time to help you and teaches in a way that is easy to understand."
