Head Lice Fact Sheet

Head lice is an occasional reality in school settings, particularly at elementary schools. Winnipeg School Division requires each elementary school to identify a school contact person who, under the direction of the school administrator, is responsible for following up on cases of head lice in the school.

The neighbourhood public health nurse is responsible for providing training for each school's contact person. The training sessions include  identification, treatment, and prevention of head lice, as well as information that should be provided to families in case head lice is discovered in the school.

Identification, treatment and prevention

Winnipeg School Division follows the Province of Manitoba and Winnipeg Regional Health Authority guidelines for identifying, treating and preventing head lice in schools. The following documents provide more information:
