Winter Bazaar
December 16, 2024
Students excitedly searched for gifts for their families during our school’s Bazar d’hiver. Items donated by the community were priced and displayed on tables for the children to purchase at child-friendly rates. Amidst the excitement, students learned by pondering what their loved ones might like. The bazaar provides students with the opportunity to become responsible consumers, learn about money, but most importantly about giving instead of receiving. It is this spirit of giving that we hope the students carry forward with them so that as they become adults, they continue to give.
The day was a resounding success. Children happily went home with their reusable or repurposed bags filled with goodies. We are working hard to promote the UN sustainable development goals. By having families bring in items that they are no longer using the community demonstrates responsible consumption and production. Because we are reducing waste and consumption, there is a positive impact on our water and land as we reduce our number of items that end up in the landfill or need to be made in factories or use up natural resources.
Each year, we choose a different charity that reflects our school priorities. As we have been focusing a lot this year on the Mamahtawisiwin document, we are looking at what it means to be "living the good life" and walking in a good way. Our students are privileged to be living a life where they have a home, food, clothing and opportunities for activities and we are learning that this is not the case for all children in our city. This year we raised $500 which we will be donating to Winnipeg Harvest. Over 108 000 Manitobans rely on Winnipeg Harvest for food every month and nearly half of those are children!
