Mastering Permutations, Combinations, and Logic through Gameplay

Mathematics 1

Today, in a Tec-Voc mathematics class, students explored permutations and combinations through the classic game Mastermind. The challenge involves cracking a hidden code by arranging five colored pegs in the correct order. A combination that earns five pegs—black or white—indicates that some elements are correct. However, the ultimate goal is to receive five black pegs, revealing the exact permutation.

With 8 possible colors and no repetition allowed, there are 8P5 unique permutations, amounting to 6,720 possible codes. Students must solve the puzzle within just 12 attempts, adding an element of strategic thinking.

In addition to permutations and combinations, students are also sharpening their deductive reasoning and gaining insights into probability—because probability is intertwined with nearly every aspect of decision-making.
