Guidance

The primary goal of the guidance program is to promote and enhance student learning through three broad and inter-related areas of student development. They are: 

• Academic Development
• Career Development
• Personal/Social Development

A school counsellor provides counselling and guidance within an educational setting, giving students the opportunity to explore feelings, examine information and consider options for problem solving and decision making. Whenever possible and appropriate, counsellors make referrals with the knowledge and consent of students. Counsellors may collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents and other professionals, and at all times act in the best interest of the students. Students can be assured that personal concerns will be discussed in a caring confidential atmosphere.

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

The Winnipeg School Division requires guidance and counselling positions to have the following professional qualifications.

• Manitoba B.ED. Degree
• Manitoba Professional Teacher's Certificate
• Post Baccalaureate Diploma in school counselling or Master's Degree
• Classroom Teaching experience

The Division encourages and supports continuous professional growth of current school counsellors by providing training to maintain professional competence and standards.

Working alongside the guidance counsellors are the intercultural support workers, the aboriginal coach, and the career intern.  

• The Intercultural Support Worker provides support to refugee and immigrant students and their families by helping to connect the students and parents to teachers and activities within the school community, as well as to outside agencies when required.
• The Aboriginal Coach provides support to all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students in grades 9 through 12.  Academic planning, student support, home/school connections, and community participation are some of the services provided to ensure that students optimize attendance and attain the credits needed for graduation.
• The Career Intern provides additional support to students in the following areas:  job hunting, resume writing, applying to post-secondary institutions, research for post-secondary requirements, volunteer opportunities, and scholarship opportunities. 

Students may stop by the Counselling area at any time. You may "drop in" or make an appointment with one of the Counsellors or the Career Intern. We look forward to meeting with every student at some point throughout the school year!

Services Available: Our services are offered free-of-charge for families with at least one child under 18 years old. We have adapted our Intake services and Family Counselling service to be delivered remotely via phone or video chat. Additionally, we now offer a Drop-In Phone Counselling service where parents, foster parents and caregivers are able to call our Intake services line (listed above) and be connected with one of our counsellors/clinicians who will be staffing these lines for a counselling session.

Families Affected by Sexual Assault Program (FASA)

We continue to offer telephone and virtual services to families wishing to access our services.

Services Available: We provide therapy to families with children [under 18 and who are not in care] who have been sexually assaulted by someone who is not a parent or sibling, and when the sexual assault has been reported to Child & Family Services

• Sexual assault may include direct or indirect sexual touching; exposure to sexual material on the internet and in movies; sexual interference; sexual exploitation
• There is no wait list for service
• There are no fees
• We accept referrals from Winnipeg and surrounding areas where families are able to travel to Winnipeg to obtain our services

FASD Family Support, Education and Counselling

Services Available: Telephone and “virtual services” offered to families supporting individuals with FASD, or confirmed pre-natal exposure to alcohol.

Help to problem-solve, offer strategies and concrete ways to support your child/youth with FASD during this difficult time.

We are available to mail and drop off information, and resources related to FASD and supporting your child. Services are free of charge.
