MUSIC

September 3, 2024

The overarching goal of the music curriculum is to support, nurture, and inspire the growth of every student as a musician and as an artful learner.
At Riverview the “Orff” approach to teaching music is utilized. The Orff method (based on the teachings of Carl Orff) concentrates on the involvement of the whole person. Music is taught through active participation in movement, rhythm, singing, form analysis, orchestration, drama, canon and speech.
The Manitoba Music Curriculum framework is based on four interrelated essential learning areas:
Making – voice, instruments, body and sound sources; music systems; elements of music; listening competencies
Creating – idea generation; experimenting, developing, revision, refinement and sharing
Connecting – people and practices; genres, styles and traditions; roles, purposes and meanings
Responding – initial reaction; listening, observation and description; analysis and interpretation; identity, action and agency
The essential learning areas are further detailed by connected sets of general and specific learning outcomes for each grade.
The music curriculum is a spiral curriculum. Key concepts are presented repeatedly throughout the grades, but with deepening layers of complexity.
The ultimate goal for the children at École Riverview School is to develop a long-lasting appreciation for music.
