Principal's Message

Welcome to École Robert H. Smith School! Located in the heart of the vibrant North River Heights community, we are proud to offer both French Immersion and English programming for students from Nursery to Grade 6. With approximately 90% of our 300 students enrolled in French Immersion, we celebrate the richness of bilingual learning, helping our students build a strong academic foundation while fostering French cultural awareness. So many parents, in fact, are choosing French Immersion, that we are currently not able to provide English programming for grades 1-3 and we anticipate having no English registrations within the next two years.

At RHS, we provide a dynamic and engaging learning environment where students thrive. We offer a range of exciting programs that allow students to explore their interests and develop their talents. Our Modern Band music program, for example, provides students with the opportunity to perform in our Winter Concert and participate in Street Fest. Our Physical Education programming, including intramurals, volleyball tournaments, Fit Runs, and participation in the Manitoba Marathon, ensures that students stay active and engaged.

One of the key focuses at RHS is French language development. Our French Immersion students develop their oral language skills, which are nurtured through innovative inquiry projects like “Invent an Alien, Destination Imagination, Historical Thinking and Heritage Fair, and Concours d’art oratoire, where students apply their learning across various subjects in an imaginative way.

Inclusion and belonging are core values at RHS. Our “IDEAS” program allows students to engage in clubs and activities focused on developing global competencies, teamwork, and leadership with peers within the same grade ranges. “Home Teams” pairs students in middle years with buddies in early years. These opportunities help build a sense of community and belonging, where all students feel supported, valued, and empowered to contribute.

Our school thrives because of the strong partnership between our staff, students, and families. Collaboration is key to creating an environment where everyone is focused on student success. Our parent council is an integral part of this partnership, and together, we continually strive to reimagine and strengthen our community.

At RHS, we are committed to providing students with leadership opportunities that help them grow both personally and academically. Whether it’s through participating in our communications crew, helping as patrols, assisting in the library, or supporting music events, our students have the chance to lead in meaningful ways.

At RHS, we prioritize professional growth for our teachers, who collaborate regularly to refine their teaching practices and enhance their expertise in areas like math, French communication, and literacy. With support from WSD learning support teacher and regular opportunities for reflection and planning, our teachers work hard to ensure the best possible outcomes for every student.

As we look to the future, we are excited about the endless possibilities for our students. We continue to build on our successes, fostering a positive and supportive environment where every child has the chance to grow, learn, and succeed. Together, we are shaping the next generation of learners and leaders at École Robert H. Smith School.
