DMCI Young Warriors take Center Stage

With only a few weeks to practice, DMCI’s Young Warriors accepted the challenge and took the stage at the Canada Life Centre on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The student lead traditional drum group performed the “Honour” song in front of all the staff in the entire Winnipeg School Division. Lead by Indigenous drum coaches Melvin Starr and Dwayne Gladue, our students successfully highlighted all their hard work and dedication to their culture to an arena of thousands!
On the way home from the performance, we had the idea to take a group photo on top of a hill near the heart of the city’s downtown. The idea was to commemorate the days’ event and capture the memories that came with it.
Inspired by the moment, the students requested to drum one more time, but on top of the hill. Mr. Starr and Gladue agreed, but stepped back and had the students drum the song on their own.
With their newfound confidence (and adrenaline) of their earlier performance, DMCI students proudly drummed and sang on the large drum, with pride, on top of that hill. A mother who was also on the hill, came over with baby in her arms, to watch and get a closer look.
As someone who was a part of this experience, October 9 will always be remembered as a significant day of hard work, courage, and pride in our young warriors.
