The Industrial Arts program at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute provides students with the opportunity to learn theory and skills for living and working in a changing technological environment. Through hands-on learning in a variety of courses such as Electronics, Drafting, Power Mechanics, and Woodworking, students will be able to apply decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills to product construction. The Industrial Arts department has recently added new courses in Bicycle Repair and Maintenance.
Do you like to build furniture and objects for your home? The Woodworking course offers students a chance to work in a safe hands-on environment building a variety of useful small projects and pieces of furniture. The skills and experience gained in this class can be valuable in a variety of careers such as Architecture, Engineering, and Manufacturing.
Are you interested in making repairs to machines and even your car? The Power Mechanics course introduces students to small engines, basic auto service, and the use of tools in a hands-on setting. As with all Industrial Arts courses, the Power Mechanics program welcomes both boys and girls. Students will experience teamwork and problem-solving in a fun and engaging environment. Credits earned can be credited toward further automotive learning.
Do you enjoy making detailed designs? The Drafting class is an introduction to drafting and design with a focus on basic mechanical drafting along with architectural drafting. Students will be using industry-standard CAD software to create sketches and multi-view drawings. This is an excellent course for anyone planning to pursue post-secondary education in Engineering, Architecture, Design, or Manufacturing.
Apprenticeship Opportunity
Grade 12 level courses are also available in Applied Technology for Electronics, Woodwork, Metalwork and Power Mechanics. These courses involve advanced coursework with an optional practicum component. Students interested in school-to-work transition may speak to their instructor about pursuing an Apprenticeship credit in addition to their Applied course credit.
