DMCI Leadership Celebrates 1000 Volunteer Hours Milestone
October 27, 2024
Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute’s Leadership Program is proud to announce that its Leadership students have reached 1,000 volunteer hours since the beginning of the year—the earliest in the program's history to achieve this milestone since its founding in 2012. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, who have been contributing their time and skills to various school and community events.
“It has been such an honor and privilege to run the Leadership program at DMCI. Providing these amazing young students with incredible opportunities to grow, learn and become the independent adults that can make a difference in our world has made every moment of effort worthwhile.” said N. Malandrakis, Leadership Program Coordinator, praising the students for their efforts.
Valuable Experiences for Students
Each year, DMCI students volunteer at a variety of school and community events, as well as organizations throughout the neighborhood. A standout event is Comic Con, where students have the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience while building confidence.
Grade 11 student Angel M., who has already contributed 35 hours this year, shared, “Volunteering at a daycare and as a scorekeeper is helping me prepare for my future career in medicine. It has made me a better listener, more empathetic, and more capable of dealing with on-the-job stress. While I can earn a credit after completing 110 hours, I don’t volunteer for the credit but for the experience. I’ve met many new people and made friends with others who share similar interests. I often think back to the quote Mr. Malandrakis put on the board during our first meeting: ‘The people who can, do. The people who can do more, volunteer.’ This has inspired me to commit to being a volunteer throughout my life.”
By the end of the school year, Daniel McIntyre students will have collectively completed over 5,000 volunteer hours, continuing the tradition of making a meaningful impact in the community.
