State of the City Address with the Mayor

March 28, 2025

Gordon Bell High school was one of two schools in Winnipeg that was invited to attend a prestigious luncheon where the mayor gave a speech on the state of the city. Four students and their teacher attended the luncheon and were treated to a wonderful lunch while they listened to several community and business leaders shared their plans for the upcoming year. After that we got to hear the mayor’s plans for the upcoming year and how he plans to address various issues like homelessness, safety, and infrastructure.

Following the luncheon, the students were invited to have a round table discussion with the mayor. During this discussion, they individually asked questions on issues pertaining to the mayor’s role in the city.

A sample of questions that were asked by our students are, “What are your plans to address the issue of homelessness in Winnipeg?” and “How does the city plan to deal with the issue of murdered Indigenous women in our province?” Our students were honored to get this opportunity to sit and chat with the mayor and to experience the process of the state of the city address.
